Saratoga County wildlife control Tip of the Month:
What equipment is needed to trap an opossum?
You've noticed the opossum a few times now, running in your garden, diving for cover when it spots you looking at it. Though it hasn't done anything to bother you yet, you know you can't just ignore it, or else you could be looking at significant damage to the shed it's currently made its home in. But you don't know the first thing about catching an opossum. How can you hope to get rid of it, if you can't even trap it? Fret not. Catching an opossum is not a difficult task, and if you follow all of these steps, your house would soon be rid of this pest.
Planning and Safety Gear
The first thing you need to do is to take some precautions. While trapping won't require you to come in direct contact with the opossum (which should be the case, since it's always a bad idea to make physical contact with wild animals), it's still smart to equip yourself with a pair of thick gloves, which you'll use when handling the trap, both when setting it and carrying it off. Also, have a plan ready about what to do with the opossum once you've caught it; you could relocate it several miles from your home in a suitable place, or hand it over to people who could do this tedious task for you. The choice is yours.
Bait
The second thing you need to trap an opossum is suitable bait because no animal would walk into an empty trap (they're not as smart as us, but still not THAT dumb). Now opossums are omnivores, which is good news for you since it means you could use a great variety of foods to lure it into your trap. However, your best choice would be to go for bait like fruits, vegetables or even leftover pet food, since these have been known to work better for them than other animals. Once you've selected your bait, keep a good amount of it inside the trap, with a little just outside it, and you're good to go.
Your choice of trap
When it comes to choosing a trap to use for catching opossums, your best choice is to use a live cage trap. Easy to use, they catch opossums lured in by bait without making a mess, and cause minimal discomfort to the animal, also making the animal easily transportable. Now you could opt for other traps like leg traps or kill traps, but those aren't as humane (or clean) as a live cage trap and so aren't recommended. But it's your choice; you'd get the job done either way.
Your bare hands….?
The quickest way to catch an opossum is using your hands. Just grab the animal by the tail and carry it off, keeping it away from your body. Though this isn't a good idea since the animal is likely to fight back. Nevertheless, it is still a much faster solution.
